Five (1981), for Brass Quintet
5 very short movements, about 10 minutes total; challenging. An early work of which I am still quite fond. Melody and harmony are freely generated from octatonic scales, usually with two or three being used simultaneously. Textures are colorful and often changed suddenly. Bass trombone may be substituted for tuba. In the first movement Trumpet II plays a ratchet, which must be mounted on a stand as there is little time to change instruments. Available from a number of commercial outlets, including here; hand-manuscripted, but nice.
I. Introduction/Exposition of Theme I. Motoric, with many sudden changes of dynamic and tone color.
II. Recitative, Theme II. Exposed solos with occasional counter-gestures.
III. Tarantella-Humoresque, Theme I. In a frantic 6/8 with klangfarben treatment of the melody.
IV. Lyric Palindrome, Theme II. Exactly as titled, this movement is a horizontal mirror in generally legato phrasing.
V. Rondo/Retrospective, Themes I and II. Snippets from earlier movements are woven together, ending with a bang.
